In the third of three songs in this collaboration with Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times, Tom, the plumber’s son, is a fun-loving scamp who learns that sometimes grown-ups have to finish their work – before they can play. When Tom’s dad explains that the sink is still leaking, and he needs the plumbing equipment that Tom took to play with, Tom apologizes and gives it back. Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times is a collection of updated nursery rhymes that nurture kindness, empathy, and gratitude. “Tom Tom the Plumber’s Son” shows Tom developing empathy and learning to wait his turn!
Say Laurie: I had so much fun bringing this updated nursery rhyme to life! The pun on Tom the Piper’s Son now being the son of a plumber who playfully grabs one of his father’s pipes, inspired me to add bagpipes and tin whistle and play up a subtle Irish feel in the tune. I imagined it as a song passed down through generations and sung by the whole family with great merriment. I love the new version of the words where Tom is a playful and mischievous kid who knows how to apologize when he’s gone a little too far.
